The Port of Williamstown Action Group ( PoWAG). PoWAG has been formed to campaign for improved infrastructure to ensure Hobson’s Bay is a safe harbour and a preferred recreational boating destination.
Over recent decades there has been a critical lack of investment in recreational boating facilities, maritime infrastructure, and the channel deepening with associated increased shipping traffic is generating dangerous wash and surge. The recent storm event with sustained strong south easterlies caused significant damage, created a real risk to personal safety and exposed the need for improved wave attenuation.
PoWAG comprises representatives of Hobsons Bay users including yacht, sailing and motor boat clubs, cultural organisations, business representatives and local government.
The State Government recently commissioned a detailed study (Williamstown Maritime Precinct Framework) which is due for public release in late November. PoWAG has been actively involved in the Framework’s process and consultation.
PoWAG is dedicated to working with Government and relevant agencies to support the Framework and the introduction of agreed, critical investment to protect and restore the amenity of the Port of Williamstown
Our central objective is for rapid action to protect against wave wash and surge …we need a safe harbour. We also need to repair dilapidated marine infrastructure (berths/piers) and ensure navigable depth. Such an investment will be a positive economic stimulus for our community, the city and state as we emerge from Covid.
